Tube allows you to empty your stomach after eating

The obesity epidemic has given rise to new surgical procedures like gastric-bypass surgery to help people lose weight.  But, a new device hopes to make losing weight less painful.

Aspire Bariatrics has requested a patent for their new device called the  Aspire Assist.  Essentially it is a tube that runs to your stomach and allows you to empy its contents after eating.

Kathy Crothall is the CEO of Aspire Bariatrics and says the procedure is attractive to patients because it is not a permanent anatomical change.

Crothall says they have used the Aspire Assist on 50 people in their test phase and those patients have lost an average of 50 lbs.  Crothall says they couple the procedure with lifestyle therapy to ensure healthy weight loss.

Aspire Bariatrics hopes to have the Aspire Assist available in the U.S. by 2015.  Similar procedures are already available in Europe.
