Police: Christmas crooks case your trash
So you got that big screen TV you've been wanting for Christmas. You've taken it out of the box and hooked it up. You've taken the box out with the rest of the garbage because it’s trash day. But Ray Hunt of the Houston Police Union says that's a mistake, and he says he learned the hard way.
“We just purchased a new TV, had the box out for the garbage, and I heard somebody kick my back door in. There was a burglar inside my kitchen. The police officer that came out said he thought it was directly related to the TV box being out there with the trash,” Hunt explained.
So what can you do to protect yourself from a Christmas Crook?
“I would cut up any big boxes that I had and put them in a container so that someone does not know the items you just purchased. It’s just smart to do,” Hunt said.
And Hunt says you should only take the trash out on the day it’s supposed to be picked up.
“Put that stuff out there on garbage day. Have neighbors watch out for your house. Do all the common sense things that people don’t think about,” said Hunt.
And there are other security measures you can take to protect yourself.
“Keep your gates locked and let your neighbors know when you are gone on vacation, the ones you trust,” Hunt explained.
