Some districts tie rumors to 12-21-12

As the end of the Mayan Calendar approaches, Houston area school districts are dealing with isolated security rumors.

Among the districts dealing with the rumors is Klein ISD. And because of what happened in Connecticut last week every rumor is being checked out. However, spokeswoman Judy Rimato says they've found nothing to substantiate those rumors.

“The Klein ISD police and the school administration have thoroughly investigated, and it has found to be completely false,” Rimato explained.

Rimato told KTRH they are doing what they can to check all of the rumors out.

“We don’t think there’s anything to these rumors, but with that said the safety and security of our students and staff is our utmost priority,” Rimato said.

And Rimato says the district is taking steps to protect your children.

“We have added police protection at all of our campuses, and we’ll continue to do that through the end of the week,” she explained.

Rimato says the district thinks tomorrow will go by without any problems.

“We feel like the students are going to be safe on Friday, and this is nothing more than rumors. It’s real easy to spread rumors these days with social media,” Rimato stated.

There have been rumors of similar incidents taking place at La Porte High School and in Katy. La Porte officials say they are looking into it.

In a statement, the school said, “"The safety of La Porte ISD students and staff is always our foremost concern, and we take all threats very seriously. We are aware of the rumors regarding the possibility of an incident involving a gun at La Porte High School this Friday. We are exercising due diligence and proceeding in a state of heightened awareness and appropriate caution, working closely with the La Porte Police Department. A letter will be going home with La Porte High School students today (12-19-2012), and LPHS parents also are receiving a message through the district’s callout system."

Katy officials say they've found no evidence that anything is happening, and that it might be a hoax tied to 12-21-12, the end of the Mayan calendar.

A statement from Katy ISD explained, ““This week, rumors have been revolving around the Mayan calendar and what some have considered as various interpretations of a prediction that points to the “end of the world” this Friday, December 21, 2012. The rumors that have been brought to our attention suggest students engaging in possible violent activities. As expected, these types of rumors and the speculation about threats can cause a great deal of appropriate concern about student safety and security.”

The district also found that, “To date, no evidence has been found to validate any of the threats being made in the rumors that are currently circulating.”
