Keep trees watered, check all lights

'Tis the season for house fires in Houston.  The city's fire department says there were more than 120 holiday related fires last December, causing over $2.5 million dollars worth of damage.

HFD spokesman Jay Evans says natural Christmas trees are especially hazard.

"Our first thoughts are to keep it watered, and be sure that the chord or string of lights you keep on it are working properly," Evans told KTRH News.

And if you have big yard displays with lots of moving parts, Evans says be sure to check those as well.

"Turn them on and be sure that every moving part is working correctly, and that there's no strange noise sounds in the motors," he says.  "Even touch and feel the motors to make sure they're not extremely hot."

Evans says it's also important to make sure you don't overload your electric outlets.
