Happened while in constable's custody
School officials say the unidentified North Shore High School student was taken to Ben Taub Hospital Wednesday morning, after apparently shooting himself in the back of the head while in the back of a Harris County Constable vehicle.
Currently the student is listed in critical condition, but officials say he was breathing and alert after the shooting.
Galena Park ISD spokesman Jonathan Frey says a friend of the student who informed North Shore officials that he was thinking about harming himself. That's when Harris County constables took over.
"As he was searched and handcuffed and put in the back of the car for his protection, and he was being transported to a facility where he could be taken care of, he managed to retrieve a hidden gun and shot himself," Frey told reporters.
North Shore canceled extracurricular activities for the day, and counselors are available for students and staff members who need help.
