Study: Number for income happiness is higher than you think

If a recent global study is correct, when it comes to payday, you probably aren’t as happy as you should be.

The average income here in Houston is between 40 and 44 thousand dollars. But Skandia International Wealth Sentiment Monitor found that average happiness income level is $161,000. Houston financial planner Richard Rosso says he doesn't read much into the study.

“I don’t know if there’s any real number for happiness, Rosso said. “If you can make your house and car payment, you’re pretty darned happy these days.”

Therapist Melody Brooke says it's not how much you make but what you do that makes you feel happy.

“Are you pursuing something that matters to you,” Brooke told KTRH. “Do you have a purpose? That’s what ultimately makes us feel like our life has meaning and brings us happiness.”

And Brooke works with enough people to know that even the rich have their issues. And usually, those issues are stress-related.

“A person with 161,000 dollars and has a million dollars worth of debt has a lot of stress, you know,” Brooke explained.

Rosso agreed and says some us are never happy no matter how much we make.

“I deal with people that no matter how much they make they can never have enough money,” Rosso said.

There was a similar study conducted here in the U.S. in 2010 that found the American level for income happiness was 75 thousand dollars.
