Expected to be the majority in Houston by 2020
Here's food for thought, which Houston television do you think had the highest ratings during the latest sweeps week?
Univision 45 saw higher viewership among all age groups than Local 2, 13, 11, 26, Telemundo and the rest. Rice Sociologist Stephen Klineberg no one should be surprised by this.
“It's a powerful reminder of the tremendous transformation that Houston is undergoing,” Klineberg tells KTRH. “Harris County is now 41% Latino and just 33% Anglo. In 1980, Harris County was 63% Anglos.”
Klineberg says because Latinos outnumber and are reproducing at a higher rate than Anglos and other races in Harris County, Latinos will be the majority by the 2020 census.
Fellow sociologist Steve Murdock says anyone who has kids in Texas schools would realize this.
“If you take the entire state of Texas, last year we ended up having over 50% of all kids in Texas public schools were Hispanic,” says Murdock.
Anglos and African-Americans haven't necessarily moved out of Houston, they are simply an aging population producing fewer and fewer kids.
