A staggering 15% of Americans receive what used to be called food stamps. Now the government sends EBT cards to 47-million of us. And we hear stories every day about using food stamps to buy alcohol, tobacco -- even at strip clubs!
Texas actually saw a 3% decline in food stamp usage in the past year and ardent supporter Jonathan Lewis at the Center for Public Policy Priorities says there's no reason to worry about fraud.
"Fraud and abuse really is not an issue, especially in today's modern era of the SNAP of food stamp program."
But Tad Dehaven at Cato says the government can't keep track of all food stamp usage.
"And there's no resource, nor would you want to waste the taxpayer’s resources doing so; but it's impossible to hold each and every individual accountable."
Dehaven agrees fraud isn't the major problem. He says the major problem is way too many get it.
