DPS calls for federal investigation of deadly immigrant shooting
The Texas Department of Public Safety wants the Justice Department to investigate a deadly incident in south Texas, which led to the deaths of two illegal immigrants.

A state trooper deployed in a helicopter fired on a truck that was being chased by police. Authorities say they believed the driver was smuggling drugs. Two Guatemalan men who were hiding under a tarp in the truck bed were killed.

Miguel Avila, a sharpshooter with ten-years of experience on the force, is on administrative duty during the investigation. A DPS report on the October 25th incident says Avila acted within departmental policy, adding there was “irrefutable” evidence the tarp never blew loose.

The Guatemalan consul in McAllen, civil rights organizations, and Democratic state lawmakers want more answers.
