Officer: "I Feared For My Safety"
An investigation is underway after an officer-involved shooting in southwest Houston leaves one man dead Monday afternoon.
It happened during a call to an assault that possibly involved weapons. Two officers responded about 4:20pm at a shopping center in the 7000 block of Bissonnet, near Fondren.
Officers saw five men in the area. Two of them ran off, and the other three started walking away. Officers followed them and ordered them to raise both of their hands.
Police say one refused and then quickly turned around walking toward the officer, hiding his hand. One of the officers opened fire, killing the suspect.
No weapons were found on any of the men. They were detained for questioning
The officer, who's been identified as J. McGowan, said she feared for her safety when she fired the gun. She's been with HPD for two years. She has been placed on administrative leave, which is protocol.
The name of the man shot was not released.
