Report Says Just 5% Is Dirty

A new report says Texas beaches are cleaner than last year, but not as clean as they could or should be.

The report from the National Resources Defense Council says 95% of Texas beach water is clean -- ranking Texas 8th out of the 30 states with beaches.

"That is an improvement; I think last year about 8% of the water quality tests came back exceeding standards for e-coli and bacteria."

Luke Metzger at Environment Texas says the goal should be zero percent dirty water, but we need greener infrastructure and less pavement.

"That pavement serves as just a very efficient conduit for the pollution, including pesticides, dog waste and motor oil."

Our neighbors in Louisiana have the dirtiest beach water at 29%.

Delaware and New Hampshire beaches are said to have the cleanest water.
