Cannibalism as an after-effect?

For some reason kids are so desperate to get high, they're taking a designer drug called 'bath salts.' But it's not really something you'd put in your bath and for some it has an unpleasant side affect: cannibalism.

Miami, Florida police say a man who ate the face of a homeless man -- before an officer shot him to death -- was hopped on bath salts. HPD Officer Michael Baccus says it's a problem here, too.

"We've been going into several different smoke shops, purchasing the bath salts along with the synthetic marijuana."

Dr. Joe Ybarra at St. Joseph's hospital says the symptoms are extreme.

"They usually present with agitation and paranoia, hallucinations, chest pains, suicidality."

And Dr. William Brown at Memorial-Hermann says treatment sometimes fails.

"Even after 60, 90, 180 days, they're still impaired after they quit using."

A Galveston father blames bath salts for his son's suicide two years ago.
