Democrats Meeting And Strategizing in Houston.

Texas's top Democrats are meeting in Houston, where they will elect a new leader and strategize on how to win more elections in the Republican-dominated state.

The party's executive committee met Thursday before the convention official opened. Party Chairman Boyd Ritchie is stepping down after six years and the convention is expected to pick a new leader.

Democrats will hold meetings of their core groups and discuss how to build support for the party beginning Thursday night. No Democrat has won statewide office since 1994, and Republicans hold a 102-48 supermajority in the Texas House. But redistricting is expected to bring that number down in November.

The top speakers at the convention include San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro and U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk, a former Dallas mayor.
