Brain surgery and Twitter will mix on Wednesday at Memorial-Hermann hospital, where a 21-year-old woman's brain surgery will be "Twittercast" to the world.
The doctor famous for his treatment of Congresswoman Gabby Giffords will operate on a woman who suffers seizures. Live tweets will update Dr. Dong Kim's progress, beginning at 7:30.
Dr. Kim performed the brain surgery on Congresswoman Giffords that resulted in her impressive recovery from a gunshot wound.
Health care attorney Lisa Dahm at South Texas College of Law says it's an educational opportunity for doctors around the world.
"In that regard, I think it's outstanding. It's also a great way for patients' families to be updated continuously. I mean, brain surgery, even for a benign tumor, can take hours and hours."
Dahm says her only concern is whether the patient knows the risks and benefits of the surgery and has agreed to the social media updates. In this case, those criteria have been met.
