Fires several deputies responsible for violations.
Harris County Sheriff Adrian Garcia says during the first several months of this year he's had to fire nine deputies or employees for violating department regulations and has had to reprimand another 30 employees.
"The folks that we do have to discipline, they are not a representation of the rest of the great majority of professional and dedicated employees," says Garcia.
among the violations committed by some of the Deputies in question are using illegal drugs or even having sex with jailed inmates, an act that State Senator John Whitmire says is illegal in Texas.
"It's shocking and it happens too often not only in the jail but in our state prison system we have issues similar to that," says Whitmire.
Whitmire said that he passed a law making it illegal for a deputy or detention officer to have consensual sex with a prison inmate.
