Mother of Children Left in a Bus Fights For Custody.

A Houston-area woman whose two children lived in an old school bus while she was in prison is out and says she's fixed up the dilapidated vehicle. Sherrie Shorten of Splendora hopes to regain custody of her 5-year-old son and her 12-year-old daughter after a hearing next Wednesday.

Child Protective Services on March 7 put the siblings in foster care. A postal worker had raised concerns about the children not in school, living in deplorable conditions with little food and no adults around. Shorten and her husband were in prison for embezzling money from victims of 2008's Hurricane Ike.

Sherrie Shorten says that the abandoned bus now has a bathroom, beds, a computer and a flat-screen television. Mark Shorten remains in prison.
