Here's Randy's Weekly KTRH GardenLine Tip:
This week's email tip is all about Hibiscus (By the way, is the plural form Hibiscii???). I've been getting a bunch of email questions regarding the Houston-area's favorite tropical plant, and rightly so at this time of the year.
So, instead of re-directing each of those emails, which I know I'll be getting even more of this weekend, I decided to put together a compilation of all the email tips we've ever done on the subject. Then, to put a bit of icing on the cake, we then help promote the Space City Hibiscus Society show and sale that will be held in Texas City this Saturday. If you can't make this Saturday's, they have another one Sunday May 31st, at the Harris County Activity Center at 7340 Spencer Highway in Pasadena.
What Causes Yellowing Leaves
Let's start with a look back with the question – Randy, my hibiscus has a ton of yellowing leaves. Is this something I should worry about, or doing anything about? This is a great overview article by a garden writer, and it covers everything but one topic – using Consan Triple Action 20 on the soil only, to help cure a possible bacteria.
What Causes Hibiscus Bud Drop
The next most asked question, has to do with premature bud drop. Here's an email blast from a couple of years back that addresses that problem.
Pink Hibiscus Mealy Bugs
Last year, we had a serious infestation of mealy bugs on Hibiscus, and some were harder to control than normal. Here's what we covered about the Pink Hibiscus Mealy Bug just last year.
Bahama Bay Hibiscus
In the past, when you want to find the unusual when it comes to hibiscus you would have to go to the shows and sales like the upcoming event this Saturday. Thanks to some development of other unusual colors on the mass scale, you can find some uniquely colored hibiscus at local nurseries and garden centers these days. Just note, that in this "dated" email tip, it's from May a year ago, so we won't be giving away free hibiscus this weekend.
Still, nothing beats the deep passion of the societies and their shows and sales, if you're looking for something way past the unusual. So, here are the details of this weekend's Space City Hibiscus Society Show and Sale.
SATURDAY MAY 16TH The Space City Hibiscus Society will hold a Hibiscus Show and Sale from 1 to 4 pm at the Nessler Center Wings of Heritage Room 2010 5th Avenue North Texas City ,/TX 77590. The Show and Sale is open to the public admission and parking is FREE. You will see hundreds of blooms and be able to purchase plants. This is a great place to come and get the answers to any questions you might have about care and growing of plants you already have. We will have the Space City Fertilizer will be available for sale. Do us a favor and pass this on to all your friend in the Gulf Coast Area so that they will know about this GREAT Show.
