What's That Tree?
|
Since it’s been a while since I’ve used these email tips to help identify certain trees or shrubs that catches everyone’s attention, there is no time like the present. In October through November for all the years that I’ve hosted GardenLine, I can always predict this question that several have asked already asked this past week "What is that tree with the pinkish flowers that almost look like bougainvillea blooms that is flowering around town?”
It is the golden rain tree, Koelreuteria bipinnata, which produces panicles of yellow flowers in October, and these are followed by the pinkish-salmon, papery seed sacs we are seeing now.
It’s not the kind of tree that everyone thinks about planting during the rest of the year, but because of it’s unusually-colored paper seeds right now, it seems that everyone is interested.
