It's time to start all the fall treatments for our lawns. If you follow my Lawn Fertilization Schedule you know what I'm talking about, or maybe you just need a subtle reminder. Well here it is. During the months of October and November (at least until our first cold spell) we have three distinct things that must be done: - Control Brownpatch - Apply Winterizer Fertilizers - Apply Pre - Emergent Herbicides Brownpatch Control: If you didn't see the tip sheet from two weeks ago, click here. No matter what you use to control Brownpatch, just remember that it likely will need to be re-applied every 21-30 days until our high temperatures have dipped to 70 or below. Winterize: There's an old maxim in the fertilizer industry, that if you could only pick one time of the year to fertilize, which one would give you the most impact? It's actually the winterizer according to these turf experts. The right kind of winterizers can be found back at the Fertilization Schedule posted above. The most important thing to remember when winterizing is to get it down before our first cold spell. Because cool soil temperatures will render the winterizer treatment ineffective. Pre-Emergent Herbicides: The worst infestation of weeds on all lawns seems to start in December and goes through February. So, if we can keep those weed seeds from germinating we can win the battle against weeds. The absolute best time to apply them is Sun., Oct. 15 through Wed., Nov. 1. Yet, remember our GardenLine Motto "It's Never Too Late To Do The Right Thing" if you forget to apply during the optimum time. If you have already done all these treatments, then give yourself a gold star, and relax for the next couple of months when it comes to gardening. One final note: As noted, there is that theory among turfgrass experts that says: "Winterizing the lawn is so important, that if you could only fertilize one time each year, winterizing would be the time." It's just a theory for discussion, not something you should actually do.
