Cactus Questions
|
For years, I've always poked fun at my inabilities to answer Cactus questions on the GardenLine. My normal answer to anyone's question involving Cactus usually was, "Plant it in sandy soil, and give it lots of sun." And while that may very well be my total knowledge of Cactus, I did know that there was a very active Cactus and Succulent Society based here in Houston that I would always refer people to.
With that in mind, if you ever really wanted to pick the brains of the Cactus experts of Houston in one location, get ready for the Houston Cactus and Succulent Society Show and Sale, September 13 & 14 at the Houston Arboretum. And the best news is that GardenLine Email Tip Subscribers can get a free gift just by mentioning this email. We'll give you the details on the freebie in just a moment, meanwhile you may want to read more about why you should be attending the HCSS Show & Sale.
The HCSS show features dozens of carefully grown, super exotic cacti and succulents from around the world. Society members show their best plants for judging and ribbons. The sale features many vendors, some traveling from afar, with wonderful selections of Arizona and California grown plants.
Local vendors bring many Houston favorites like Crown of Thorns, Adeniums (Desert Rose), Madagascar Palms and many others suitable for outdoor containers. Landscape plants such as Agave and Yucca will be available as well as a host of cacti that will do very well all year in the Houston weather.
HCSS has a prize for GARDENLINE newsletter members. The first thirty newsletter members at our show get a free baby barrel cactus. Just mention it to one of the HCSS members. We will also have door prizes.
One of the best things about our show and sale is the free advise about growing cacti and succulents. We want you to be successful at this fascinating pastime.
The Houston Arboretum and HCSS share in the proceeds from the sale. There are many things to do at the Arboretum so come see what the Houston Cactus and Succulent Society and the Houston Arboretum have for you. The Houston Arboretum is located at 4501 Woodway, just inside Loop 610 at the start of Memorial Park. 713-681-3665
Again, the HCSS Show & Sale will be Sept. 13-14 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days.
