Summer Camps for Gardenline Kids
– -- Okay, Just Fun Kid Camps That I Thought Were Cool Sounding!
|
I asked my friend, Jennifer Weiner with the Houston Museum of Natural Science and the Cockrell Butterfly Center if there was any information we could pass along to our GardenLine Family about upcoming "camps." This is what she sent us, and what I send to you via this week's email tip. I hope some of your kids can take part.
Do your children start bugging you about summer boredom as soon as the last school bell rings? Why not have them learn about real bugs this summer? From June 2 through August 8, the Houston Museum of Natural Science will offer their popular Summer X*Plorations camps. Several of the weeklong camps concentrate on the insect world, and children will get up close and personal with a few of our flying, crawling, and buzzing friends. Campers ages 4 & 5 will visit the HMNS Insect Zoo and take some new ladybug friends home with them in "Bug-A-Boo". Your 6-7 year-olds will build bug motels, make bug trappers, and perform experiments as they learn more about a "Bug's Life". Older children (ages 8-12) will make their own compost in "Down and Dirty", dissect a grasshopper in "Cool Creatures and Fantastic Flyers", learn what insects and flowers make a good meal in "Crazy Kitchen Chemistry", and find out why maggots are our friends in "Blood Suckers and Meat Eaters". True insect enthusiasts ages 10-13 will spend time outdoors acquiring specimens to mount and label for their own personal collections in "Insect Investigators".
If a trip to the Museum sounds more like a long journey than a simple drive, then a Neighborhood Camp might be for you. This year, four locations-Kingwood, The Woodlands, Sugar Land, and Friendswood-are hosting the Museum's Summer X*Plorations program, making it easier for those outside Beltway 8 to participate. And, an all-day field trip to the Museum, included in the program, is a highlight of the week for neighborhood campers. "Blood Suckers and Meat Eaters" will be available for children ages 6-12 in Kingwood (June 23-27), Sugar Land (July 14-18), and The Woodlands (July 21-25). "Bug's Life" will be available only to children ages 6-7 in Sugar Land (July 7-11), The Woodlands (July 14-18), and Friendswood (July 28-Aug. 1).
For more information on dates, times, and prices, please visit the HMNS website at www.hmns.org. Simply click on "camps" at the top of the screen, then click on "Summer Camps at the Museum" or "Neighborhood Camps".
