  • For those of you vegetable gardening enthusiasts, (and especially for those are pretty darn good at it) you have a chance to prove your abilities and get rewarded for it as well.

On Saturday, June 4, 2005, Cornelius Nurseries will be holding its 7th Annual Tomato & Vegetable Contest. I will also be broadcasting GardenLine live from the Dairy Ashford location on this day. This fun event, always held the first Saturday in June, unofficially kicks off the Cornelius summer selling season. By this time, Houston gardens are producing a bounty of vegetables. Avid gardeners can bring their tomatoes and veggies in to be judged by county extension agents and urban gardening specialists.

Judging this year begins at Noon at all 3 Cornelius Garden Centers. Again, while we are broadcasting GardenLine live from the Dairy Ashford location, if you live closer to the other two Cornelius', I strongly encourage your entry at those two sites.

    Categories-

  • Largest Tomato. 1st place ($25 + ribbon)
  • Best Quality Tomato. 1st place ($100 + ribbon); 2nd place ($50 + ribbon), 3rd place ($25 + ribbon)
  • Best Vegetable Basket. 1st place ($100 + ribbon); 2nd place ($50 +ribbon), 3rd place ($25 + ribbon)

Entry forms and additional details are available at Cornelius Nurseries or on their website: http://www.corneliusnurseries.com. The public is invited to attend and light refreshments will be served. Cornelius staff will be on hand to answer gardening questions and share ideas.

    The three locations are:
  • On Dairy Ashford immediately south of the Katy Freeway.
  • On Voss south of San Felipe but North of Westheimer
  • On FM 1960 West of I-45 near Kuykendahl

Until next issue, here's to Great Gardening from the GardenLine, heard exclusively weekend mornings from 8 to noon on Talkradio 950 KPRC.
