Here's Randy's Weekly KTRH GardenLine Tip:

MULCH, MULCH MORE ON MULCH

I've been getting a lot of questions recently, mostly by email, and mostly by people who have apparently never listened to the GardenLine radio show. The reason I say this is because they have been asking something like this: "I just saw you recently on chapter 11 talking all about mulch, but you didn't say whether you liked rubber mulch or not." Yes, for those of you who are GardenLine devotees, you're allowed to laugh out loud, but, based on the number of e-mails that asked that same question, I think it's worth going over everything about mulch. Unfortunately, since I don't have the time to re-write an entire chapter on the subject, so, I just harvested the chapter on mulch from my book Gulf Coast Gardening, and have pasted the whole dang thing right here for you, but before we get into that, here's just a quick reminder of three mulches you should stay away from at all possible costs.

DO NOT USE IN YOUR LANDSCAPE:

  • Rubber mulches
  • Dyed Mulches
  • Boiler Ash Stained Mulches

By the way, to understand the advancements that have been made in the area of mulch in the last 10 years, keep in mind that even when I wrote this book I only lightly mentioned rubber mulches. Interestingly enough, in the past 2 years since the book was published, rubber mulch makers have really hit the market in a big way, but if you want to read more details about why I don't recommend rubber mulch, please read this tip sheet from last year.

As for what are the best mulches for landscaping purposes, read this entire chapter on mulches so you'll better understand their purposes and ultimate uses.

Until next issue, here's to Great Gardening from the GardenLine, heard exclusively, 6-10 a.m. Saturdays and 7-10 a.m. Sundays, only on NewsRadio 740 KTRH.
