Here's Your Weekly KPRC Gardenline Tip:

Issue #33

Most of you who listen to the radio show enough, probably already know what a big fan I am of the Master Gardener Program. Each of our four major counties in the listening area (Harris, Fort Bend, Montgomery & Galveston) all have very good programs. But what if you can't devote an entire month or week to educating yourself to be a certified Master Gardener? Well, then I have a mini Master's Gardener Class, provided by the Harris County Cooperative Extension Office. Below are the details from Michael Morrison, Extension Horticulture Agent for Harris County. And believe it or not, it's only a one-day event, April 2 at the Harris County Cooperative Extension Offices at Bear Creek Park.

Basic information in this all day seminar includes things that basic gardeners and residential homeowners need to know to bloom into a better gardener. This is like a mini Master Gardener program with lots of great information to make your garden and lawn a smashing success.

Topics for the part one session on Saturday April 2 include Botany by T.R.Zimmerman and the basics so you will understand the real plant world and how it all works.

Plant diseases and insects talk will be given by retired extension agent Dr. Charles Cole. This is a great way to learn about the good bugs and critters and the bad ones. This is enormous for you in all gardening situations.

Lawn care will be taught by Michael T. Morrison who is the Extension agent for Harris County. He will show you how to save money on your lawn and landscape through various methods as he walks you through improving your residential setting and how you can save money!! Michael also will have a short comedy on Trowel and Error in the garden to make you laugh during this day of gardening information and learning.

Tom Leroy from Montgomery County Extension offices will come down for this event to teach you vegetable gardening for the Houston area and the types of veggies you can grow here with ease.

John Ferguson will teach composting in the back yard and the soil food web. This is great information on how to use your common waste from the kitchen and yard to make great compost for your garden and landscape.

Nancy Brandli will talk about rain gardens, color design, and gardens styles in a wonderful presentation. Nancy is from Liberty County and will basically show you the many different types of gardens you can have in your landscape.

Mark Dieter will teach you basics of irrigation for your landscape too.

Lunch is provided and refreshments as well for this event.

The Basics of Residential Horticulture is brought to you by Michael T. Morrison and the Educational Outreach Program. The first installment of this event will be Saturday April 2, and part II on August 13th at the Bear Creek Extension offices just off I-10 and Highway 6. For more reservations and information call 281-855-5600.
