  • Have you ever wanted someone like me to speak to your Garden Club, Homeowners Association or community service club like Rotarians or Kiwanis??? But what if you need a Fruit Tree Expert or an Herb Expert, as opposed to someone like me who knows a lot about landscaping. I do get asked to do such speaking events quite a bit, and sadly I turn down more than I can agree to, due to the sheer number of requests. However, I think I may have found the answer to help serve everyone. It’s the Garden Speakers List from Brenda Beust Smith, the Lazy Gardener from the Houston Chronicle.

When I’ve been unable to agree to a Garden Club’s speaking engagement due to scheduling conflicts, I’m normally asked if I know of anyone else who could speak to such groups. I try to rack my brain for a couple of ideas, and besides recommending someone like Brenda herself, I could never come close to the number of people that Brenda has compiled in her list.

What’s the catch? You have to pay her $3.00 for the list… Yep, it’s that simple. Trust me when I tell you she’s not getting rich for sending you this list, because she’s doing all the leg work and she’s incurring the costs of printing etc. But for $3.00, I think she’s under-charging for doing all the work for the rest of us. So, for all you Garden Club Speaker Coordinators and Kiwanis Club Speaker Coordinators for the coming year, here is your very worthwhile opportunity to get a list of potential Garden-related speakers to come to your event. It could be someone who’s an herb expert or a plumeria expert or an organic expert, and the research is already done for you.

The list tells you what the speaker’s primary area of expertise is and whether they have a fee or not, and of course how to contact them. And yes, I’m on that list if you’re interested in contacting me for a speaking engagement.

So, here’s all you need to do -- send a check payable to Brenda B. Smith for $3.00 and enclose a SASE (Self-Addressed Stamped Envelope) and mail to:

    Lazy Gardener’s Speakers List
    14011 Greenranch
    Houston, TX 77039

Okay, so technically it’s going to cost you $3.39 total for this speakers list. Yes, .39 cents … if you haven’t been paying attention to the news, they are raising the rate by two cents. But, in total, it’s a drop in the proverbial bucket if you need more than one Garden Expert to speak at your event during the coming year.
