Here's Randy's Weekly KTRH GardenLine Tip:

Issue #230

Rain, Rain … Come Again for Many Days!

I'm overwhelmed with things to talk about this week due to the significant rain this past week. Trust me … it's a good problem to have.

Obviously, this is not the end of the drought. We are still 20+ inches below our yearly rainfall totals. The rains were welcome, but they shouldn't stop us from taking measures to battle the effects of the drought and making ourselves more drought-proof for the future.

Keep up with the mulching, keep adding humates, keep adding compost here and there. And continue helping your soil become more organic with everything from liquid organic fertilizers to soil activators and surfactants so water penetrates further to the root systems.

The rains and cooler temperatures allow us to finally start winterizing and give our lawns their fall treatments. If we didn't get the rains and/or cooler temperatures, it could have delayed the fall part of our fertilization schedules. However, the rains and these cooler temps have taken the handcuffs off, so to speak. Even if you are still on minor irrigation restrictions, you can stick to the schedule, be it the synthetic or organic, since you only need one or  two days of watering to activate the fertilizations. If you are on a complete watering restriction, you will need to wait for more rain and try to time it just right.

GardenLine Appearance = Cheap Mulch This Saturday
Living Earth, 17835 Interstate 45 South

In the past, the Living Earth $10 mulch deal happened once a year. However, the drought may have forced them into delirium, and they want to do it again. Get a cubic yard of Houston Mulch/Shredded Hardwood Mulch for just $10 at all 11 locations this Saturday.

Actually, the drought is the main reason they are offering this again. It's a wise move. The easiest thing you can do for most trees and landscapes during a drought is to provide quality mulch at least three times a year.

Is there a catch? Not really, but the deal is available Saturday only until 1 p.m. And you need to mention my name or wear your Lemmonhead shirt. Don't have one? I’ll be at one location with a few  to hand out.

A cubic yard of mulch for $10 is dirt cheap, my friends.

To put that in perspective, most pickup trucks can carry just under two cubic yards, and most trailers can carry up to five. There is a 10-cubic-yard limit, but you can make multiple trips. Here's the breakdown: one cubic yard of mulch is roughly 27 cubic feet. The average bag of mulch contains three cubic feet. That's about nine bags of mulch for only 10 bucks. If you get two cubic yards for $20 this Saturday, you'll save about 40 smackers! So, it's not just a good deal, it's a GREAT DEAL! But it's for one day only!!

I will be at The Woodlands Living Earth location ready to look at your weeds and/or sick-to-dying plant samples, as well. We've also got free food and soft drinks. And while Living Earth is famous for their homemade sausage-on-a-stick, but we could get some serious barbecue this time. To coincide with the $10 mulch, buy two copies of my new book and I'll give you a third for $10. (A single copy is $15.) Cash or check only - I don't have the ability to process debit/credit cards.
