That might not be a bad title for a blog, but until I finish the next book (which I am diligently working on), I will have to stick to these weekly missives as a sort of blog. Remember, though, that there's the GardenLine Facebook page where many listeners voice their opinions and help answer others' questions. In fact, I could use your help in eclipsing the entire KTRH Facebook page, ... my lowly little show page on its own is right on the station page's heels. So, if you haven't fanned-up yet, please do.

I feel like I'm all over the place with blasts of information this week ... sort of like a political blog. I'll try to keep my ramblings short and to the point, though, with links to you can fly off to for further research.

Environmental Design Planting Trees at New York 9/11 Memorial

Since it's the ninth anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, I thought it appropriate to remind everyone of the great visit we had with a local company that's helping replant trees at Ground Zero. Let's start by thanking Tom and Paul Cox of Environmental Design, the professional Houston tree-moving company, for taking time to give us an overview of the project. It was great, heart-felt information, and we got to hear the emotional side of the effort from their perspective. If you didn't get a chance to hear them on last week's show, check out the podcast HERE. On the 9/11 Memorial website, you can monitor the progress via a webcam and see the first 16 trees planted of what will eventually be over 380.

Basic Brownpatch Banter On last weekend

's show, I had to clarify the names of some products and what they do for brownpatch (pictured right). And that prompted me to send you a little reminder on brownpatch control, just as I have every year I've been doing GardenLine e-mail tips. For the sake of simplicity, here's last year's tip. I bring it up, because it won't be long (especially after all the rains from Hermine) before we start to see brownpatch rear its ugly head. What is not covered in last year's tip sheet is the simple answer for organic control measures. That's Actinovate, from the local company Natural Industries. As for all the other "fungicides" out there, you will see their names and spellings in the tip sheet.

Sod Webworm Warning I've had lots of e-mails about what seems to be an early infestation of sod webworms (pictured left) ... people are seeing moths hovering over their yards. Please read this tip sheet from last year on the subject. You'll learn what to look for and how to control them.

Never a Better Time to Deep Root Water Trees If you ever wanted to do your own deep-root tree feeding, there couldn't be a better time. Following all the recent rain, the ground isn't ever going to be any softer. So, HERE IS an overview of deep-root watering/feeding practices as endorsed by GardenLine.

Use Organic Fertilize as a Stop-Gap If you want to fertilize earlier than normal because you didn't fertilize in the summer, because you were concerned about drought, then go ahead and do your winterization treatment now. However, I might also suggest a light organic fertilizer as stop-gap measure. See the organic schedule for the names and numbers of companies with products that are easy to find and easy to use.
