It's mid-April, and that officially opens what I call "Show & Sale Season!"

With so many plant-specific societies in our community, it's nearly impossible to keep up with all the events for cactus, plumeria, hibiscus, azaleas, camellias, orchids etc., etc. So, I thought I would promote a few in this week's tip sheet, and give you my secret for finding info on everything coming up. It's the Houston Chronicle's gardening pages at www.chron.com/houstongardening. I wish I had a staff like they do to help us keep track of all the dates ... it's hard enough just remembering where I'm going to be each spring weekend.

Here are a few events you should be aware of this weekend:

Houston Orchid Society Show & Sale - April 17-18, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. both days at the Houston Museum of Natural Science in Hermann Park. This group will dispel those myths about the difficulty of growing orchids. Plus, you'll have a chance to buy some unusual varieties that aren't likely to be available at any garden center or floral shop.

Space City Chapter American Hibiscus Society Show & Sale - April 18, 1-4 p.m. at the East Harris County Activity Center, 7340 Spencer Hwy., Pasadena. If you're looking to replace all the Hibiscus you lost thanks to the January deep freeze, this is a golden opportunity. You can also find the much-sought-after Space City Hibiscus Fertilizer. And there will be experts on hand to answer all your questions. Plus, (tell me where you've heard this before) you'll be able to purchase Hibiscus you won't find at any nursery or garden center.

How to Attract Butterflies to Your Garden - April 17, 10 a.m. at the Arbor Gate, F.M. 2920 1.5 mile west of F.M. 249, Tomball. This isn't actually a "show" or "sale," but it's a free seminar that will "show" you exactly how to attract butterflies to your garden. And, you can find such plants for "sale" afterwards. The seminar is conducted by Eddie Holick, director of Horticulture at the Houston Museum of Natural Science, where the Cockrell Butterfly Center resides.

Meet Randy Lemmon at the Kingwood Garden Center - April 17, 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at 1216 Stonehollow Drive, Kingwood. Okay, it's neither a show nor a sale, but I thought it was appropriate to tell you where I'm going to be this Saturday, following the radio program. The last time we were at the Kingwood Garden Center, we had a line stretching out the door the entire time, and this week should be no different. Bring your questions and plant samples directly to me, and get answers to all your gardening questions one-on-one. Plus, we'll have prizes, lots of samples from Soil Mender, and a fresh supply of Lemmonhead T-shirts!
