Brookwood Community Open House Friday & Saturday Your Chance to Get the Best Poinsettias Ever If you didn't get a chance to hear the great interview we had with Vivian Shudde, executive director of The Brookwood Community last weekend, then please take a moment to listen to the podcast.
If you don't know about the amazing work they do, I also invite you to attend their open house Friday and Saturday. If you want poinsettias that I truly believed are touched by God, you MUST find your way to The Brookwood Community or their satellite stores in Old Town Spring or at Westheimer and Seagler. But if you can make it out to their facility just west of Houston in Brookshire, it will change the way you see how functionality disabled adults can live their lives. They also have more than poinsettias for sale, and proceeds from everything you purchase will help keep the place running. Take a tour if you have time, and if your perception of what mentally challenged adults can do for society doesn't change, I will be surprised.
Now, let's cover how to care for those magnificent poinsettias once you get them home. One of the first tip sheets I ever compiled was this one designed to help you keep poinsettias alive through the holidays and eventually plant them in the landscape. One of my favorite e-mail tips of all time was this one in which I countered all the myths and falsities about Poinsettias being poisonous. THEY ARE NOT POISONOUS!!! That tip sheet, along with the info at www.snopes.com, will yield all kinds of information you can use at this season's cocktail parties when some bozo asserts, "I don't buy poinsettias because I've heard they're poisonous." The other bit of fun information in the tip sheet concerns the pronunciation of the name of the plant. Poin-SET-e-uh is my preference, but poin-SET-uhas, the lazy man's pronunciation, is still dictionary-legal. Finally, take a look at the great all-around care sheet from Ohio State University, one of the most prolific horticultural institutions in America. It reminds you of all the techniques you can use to have the best looking indoor poinsettias during the holidays.
