SANTA MARIA

Posted June 24th, 2014 @ 8:20am

It’s not a treasure ship, but it would be a treasure trove of history.  The Santa Maria, the flagship of Christopher Columbus, may have been located in Haitian waters of Hispaniola.

It was the underwater explorer Barry Clifford who said in May that he may have found the wreckage, based on the location and diaries of Columbus. He has found, he says, diving evidence of items consistent with the 15th Century.  The Santa Maria ran aground on Christmas Day in 1492.

Now the Haiti government has asked UNESCO to send a team of experts to assess and to help preserve the wreckage if it is indeed the Santa Maria.  A date for the diving will depend on weather.

It’s all just a matter of time, after all.
