Saturday Preparations for Approaching Arctic Blast

A slushy line of widespread freezing drizzle Saturday morning extends from Shreveport down south of Austin and San Antonio. TX DOT is reporting icy roads at the College Station Airport.

That is not expected to reach the Greater Houston area today, but preparations are underway across the area as residents get ready to hunker down by Sunday evening. There is a chance for drizzle in the Houston area Saturday night and scattered sleet is possible, challenging drivers venturing on the roadways.

All of Southeast Texas is under a Winter Storm Warning and along the coast a Winter Storm Watch. A Winter Storm Warning is in effect from 9 p.m. this evening through 6 p.m. Monday for Houston, Trinity, Madison, Walker, San Jacinto, Polk, Burleson Brazos, Washington, Grimes, Montgomery, Colorado, Austin and Waller Counties. A Winter Storm Watch is in effect through Monday afternoon for Northern Liberty, Inland Harris, Chambers, Wharton, Fort Bend, Inland Jackson, Inland Matagorda, Inland Brazoria, Inland Galveston, Southern Liberty, Coastal Harris, Coastal Jackson, Coastal Matagorda, Coastal Brazoria, and Coastal Galveston Counties, the Matagorda Islands, Brazoria Islands, Galveston Island and the Bolivar Peninsula.

By Sunday night the entire area can expect to be under a Winter Storm Warning.

At a Friday afternoon press conference Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo likened preparations to what the area might see with an approaching Cat 5 hurricane.

The cold weather is going to be brutal as the City of Houston and surrounding communities plan warming stations and homeless shelters.

Snow is expected Monday well north of Houston. The Houston Metro area can anticipate a combination of snow, sleet and freezing rain.

All residents are advised to keep pets indoors, wrap pipes, protect tender vegetation, and stay indoors and off the roads from Sunday night at least until Monday night, and possible Tuesday depending on how the forecast develops.
