Bar near Museum District destroyed in early morning blast

An explosion and fire at Bar 5015 in the 5100 block of Almeda rocked a wide area near the Houston Museum District just before 5 a.m. Friday.

Reports say the explosion could be felt as far away as the Texas Southern University campus. Residents in apartments nearby said windows had been shattered by the explosion.

Police and fire officials are investigating the incident, which left debris scattered in the street and damaged nearby businesses, including a soul food restaurant. A food truck apparently associated with the recently reopened bar was reported destroyed. Authorities temporarily closed some streets around the bar, a portion of which was still standing.

No injuries have been reported. Police say the bar had closed at 11 p.m., so it wasn't believed anyone was inside.

The cause of the blast was under investigation.
