Sugar Land Prison to Close

A Texas prison in Sugar Land is one of two state lockups that will soon be closing because of declining inmate population.

State Senator John Whitmire, a Houston Democrat, announced on Thursday that the Jester One Unit in Sugar Land will be shut down this summer.

Another state prison in Beeville is scheduled to close in May.

Whitmire says all prison personnel will be offered jobs at nearby prisons.

The state prison population is reportedly dropping because of a lower Texas crime rate, less recidivism, and diversion and education programs.
