Political Talk in the Office is Frowned Upon, But Highly Common

Ask most people if it’s okay to talk politics in the office and you’ll get a litany of “no” responses. Glassdoor asked people and 60% said no.

Then they asked respondents if they did it. 57% said yes.

In these times of heightened and fraughtfully emotional political opinions, a political comment can feel like dancing blindfolded through a minefield, not sure when the next explosion will occur but pretty certain there will be one. Two national firms surveyed people’s opinions about workplace political conversations and found they’ve become more frequent in the past four years, not less, as Americans move firmly to one side of the political divide or the other. We’re a bipolar nation of strong passions populated by a bunch of workaholics who don’t use all our allotted vacation time so it should be expected that expressive politics will find its way into office small talk frequently. What needs to be remembered is civility.
