Hacker Breaches Data for 100M Americans

More than 100-million Americans and six-million Canadians have their personal data breached by a hacker in Seattle.

Capital One reported 140,000 Social Security numbers, 80,000 bank account numbers, and personal information from credit card applications over the last 14 years were compromised. The bank tells Fox Business most of of the hacked data consists of information supplied by consumers and small businesses who applied for credit cards between 2005 and early 2019.

The FBI has arrested the hacking suspect, identified as Paige Thompson a 33-year old software engineer. Authorities say she left an extensive digital footprint of her alleged crime, and even bragged about it on the Internet. The former Amazon Web Services employee is charged with one count of computer fraud and abuse, and is being held until her initial hearing on Thursday.

Capital One CEO Richard D. Fairbank issued a statements saying, “While I am grateful that the perpetrator has been caught, I am deeply sorry for what has happened. I sincerely apologize for the understandable worry this incident must be causing those affected and I am committed to making it right.”

According to USA Today it's one of the ten largest data breaches of all time.
