Foul Smell Coming from the Houston Ship Channel

Air quality tests overnight found no cause for alarm after Friday afternoon’s collision of the oil tanker Genesis River with the tug boat Voyager. The tug was pushing two barges, each loaded with 25,000 gallons of the gasoline stock blend Reformate. One barge was almost sliced in half and has been leaking the chemicals into the Ship Channel.

The cities of Friendswood and League City say following the overnight tests they are not recommending protective actions.

A unified command is established by the Coast Guard, Texas General Land Office, and Kirby Inland Marine.

The Houston Ship Channel is closed from Light 61-75.

No injuries were reported.
