Guatemalan Child Died From Organ Failure Caused By Bacterial Infection

(El Paso, TX) -- The medical examiner says a seven-year-old immigrant child who died in December suffered from a deadly bacterial infection. Jakelin Caal died at an El Paso hospital after she collapsed while in Border Patrol custody with her father. Last week,

El Paso County Medical Examiner Mario Rascón's report shows Caal had a strep bacterial infection in her bloodstream that lead to liver failure which caused her death. Immigrant rights activists and lawyers for the child's family accuse border officials of not acting quickly enough to get Caal the medical attention she needed.
