Harris County Urged to Vote for Flood Protection

As the one-year anniversary of Harvey approaches, elected officials and civic leaders are appealing to Harris County voters to support Proposition A, a bond issue to address flooding issues.

The $2.5 billion measure would fund about 150 area projects to fix flood damage and limit future flooding risks.

County Judge Ed Emmett headlined a group of elected officials who gathered at a news conference Thursday – staged near the water at picturesque White Oak Bayou – to urge support for the measure.

Emmett says proposal reflects both coordination and urgency – and will make for “a more resilient community.”

Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner says it’s “essential” that the bond issue be approved.

“We cannot afford to get this one wrong,” he said at the news conference.

Early voting is already under way for the bond issue. The formal election day is Aug. 25.
