Karolyis Not Charged in Gymnastics Sex Scandal

Legendary gymnastics coaches Bela and Martha Karolyi will not be charged in the sex scandal that tainted the name of their famed training center in Huntsville, Texas.

A Walker County grand jury indicted former sports doctor Larry Nassar with six counts of second-degree sexual assault of a child.  Former trainer Debbie Van Horn was also charged.

Walker County prosecutor Stephanie Stroud said during a news conference, “more women were identified as possible victims in Walker County, and ultimately a total of eight victims made reports to the Sheriff’s Office regarding Dr. Nassar.”

Governor Greg Abbott ordered the investigation, after several athletes came forward claiming the Karolyis could have stopped the assaults.  Two of the gymnasts claim they were abused at the facility.

The Karolyis denied any knowledge of the mistreatment.  Stroud said, “We don’t believe at this time there’s any corroborated evidence to support criminal charges”, adding the couple has cooperated with the investigation.

Their Huntsville training facility was closed as a result of the scandal.

Nassar has been accused of molesting more than 200 people over a 30-year period.  He is serving a decades-long prison sentences in Michigan – up to 175 years - for sexual assault and possession of child pornography.  His crimes against young athletes also created a massive scandal at Michigan State University.
