As economy booms, get ready for more robot workers

The robot work force is in the news again. Yes, the economy is booming, but at the same time more robots are being deployed for jobs that humans do.

One tech company is rolling our giant robots to replace workers in hotels, airports and even supermarkets. Lone Star College economist Hank Lewis tells KTRH this will impact things negatively.

“Very often when we’ve had an upgrade in technology there tends to be a reshuffling of the labor force and there can be some unemployment in the short term,” Lewis explained.

But it's not all bad news. There is a silver lining to this cloud. The robots may need people, too.

“Those robots still have to be serviced. Of course it takes fewer people to service them than it does the people they are replacing. But those who do acquire those skills can move to the service industry to service the machines,” Lewis explained.

And new numbers show that job cut announcements last year were at their lowest level since 1990.
