American researchers: We can now edit human embryos

American researchers have announced a breakthrough; they can now edit human embryos and improve their DNA.

The breakthrough could help doctors prevent disease in future humans. In essence we are on the verge of having the ability to create better humans. But, there are medical and ethical questions to answer.

None of these embryos were allowed to develop for more than a few days, but Dr. Shannon Holzer at Houston Baptist University says there could be medical problems down the road we can't even foresee.

“You don’t know what diseases you’re causing. The real question is on what ground do we call something good,” Holzer explained while also adding that prevention of disease is a good thing.

Dave Welch with the Houston Area Pastor's Council tells KTRH there are moral ramifications as well.

“Points back to the first fundamental question of the creation of human life and at what point life begins and at what point we are going to experiment with existing human life,” Welch said.

The bottom line is, just because you can do it, doesn't mean you should do it.
