Facebook wants to become as important as churches, little leagues

Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg says the social media giant can play a role that churches and even little leagues do, or did.

At a recent speech in Chicago, Zuckerberg reinforced that message promoting Facebook groups.

“The idea behind our new mission is to bring the world closer together,” Zuckerberg said.

He wants Facebook groups to be as important to you as your local community support groups. Psychologist Wendy Rice tells KTRH this is because people seem to communicate more on social media than they do face to face these days.

“Facebook groups can be helpful, but they are not the same as face to face interactions,” Rice said.

So, what are the long term ramifications of trading real human contact with social media interaction?

“We’ve begin to see some decreases in empathy and some decreases in social competencies for kids, and I think it can lead to isolation,” Rice explained.

But we also don't know what the full impacts of this will be; because not enough time has passed since social media became such a big factor in our lives.
