Oil Production to Dip Slightly Because of Cindy

Update: 2:32 a.m.

U.S. oil production is taking a partial pause because of Tropical Storm Cindy.

Offshore oil and gas operators in the Gulf of Mexico evacuated platforms and rigs because of the storm, according to the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement.

People have evacuated from 40 production platforms, or 5.4 percent of the 737 staffed platforms in the gulf, the agency says.

Production platforms are the offshore structures in fixed positions -- as opposed to mobile drilling rigs. Evacuation involves "shut-in" closing safety valves below the surface to prevent the release of oil or gas.

BSEE says about 17 percent of oil production and but just 0.32 percent of natural gas in the gulf has been shut-in.
