Changed Voter ID Bill Headed to Full Senate

The latest version of a voter identification bill is headed for the full Texas Senate next. A ruling by a federal appeals court last summer has made some adjustments to the state law necessary.

Houston attorney Gordon Quan says the new law offers an expanded list of of acceptable forms of identification.

“The fact that you could bring in alternative identification, such as bills and invoices, to show who you are, and it doesn't even have to have the photo on it,” Quan says, “is certainly a big improvement.”

A person wanting to vote, but lacking a picture ID, will have to say they can't reasonably obtain one. Lying about that could leave a voter facing severe legal penalties.
