Three months of preparation, a well-presented pitch and Houston is going to host Super Bowl 51.
The job’s just starting…
Houston city and Harris County leaders wore big smiles Wednesday when they talked about the big game coming here in 2017. Mayor Annise Parker says Houston “knows how” to put on major sporting events.
“You can clearly tell that we are in the rotation with the leagues,” Parker says. “They want to come back to Houston. We have never delivered less than an outstanding event.”
Houston edged past Miami with a flashy presentation and a solid history of performance. Rick Campo headed up the group which pitched the NFL owners.
Campo says the 10 days before the big game will draw a million people to the area. Many of the activities at “Super Bowl El Centro” will be specifically for NFL fans who aren’t buying a ticket.
“(Those fans) will come down here,” Campo says, gesturing to Discovery Green, “and will also be at Reliant Stadium for a festival where people can celebrate their love for the NFL and for Houston.”
