Strip Clubs Must Pay Up

Strip Clubs Must Pay Up
Posted May 7th, 2014 @ 4:26am by KTRH’s Dale Forbis

Groups fighting against sexual assault are gratified to hear that Texas strip clubs now have to start paying the so-called "pole tax."  Those clubs will have to charge customers five dollars apiece, then forward the money to the state.  Annette Burrhus-Clay is executive director of the Texas Association Against Sexual Assault.  The comptroller has sent letters to those clubs.

“I am glad to see that the comptroller actually sent this out,” Burrhus-Clay says, “because my concern is that they will keep filing lawsuit after lawsuit after lawsuit.”

The clubs say the pole tax could put some of them out of business.

“They thought they were in the driver's seat and didn't want to take any compromise, and now they're coming back and asking for things that had been offered for years,” she says.  “So, I don't have a lot of sympathy.”

She says what she wants is simple.

“I hope that these folks actually see that they need to pay up,” she says, “and that the money actually starts going out to the programs that really need it.”
