Harris County takes some big steps to prevent elder abuse.  It’s a big problem here because the elder population is so big – 333 thousand.  The team now working together includes the district attorney’s office, the Harris County Sheriff and Adult Protective Services, where James Booker leads the effort.  The bilingual project includes a half-dozen billboards around the metro.  Booker says exploitation of the elderly causes terrible problem.

"Exploitation can lead to depression, anxiety and also, we believe that it leads to premature mortality," Booker says.

He says everyone should be aware of the possibility of elder abuse - so it can be reported quickly.

"The number one reporter for those types of cases would be medical personnel.  They would be 20 percent," he says.  "The one perpetrator would be adult children, 42 percent."
