The Pearland All-Stars survived a first-round scare in the Little League World Series against Rhode Island, winning 6-4.

They will advance to play Pennsylvania on Sunday.

Pearland drew first blood in the first inning with two runs. Presley Smith hit a single to second base that scored Cole Smajstrla. The ball was fielded poorly by Rhode Island and it brought in Clayton Broeder to give Pearland a 2-0 lead.

The All-Stars walked in a run when Matthew Adams earned a base on balls. Smajstrla scored from third, making it 3-0.

Rhode Island would respond in the bottom of the third inning when Mason Matos drilled a line-drive home run.

Pearland pitcher Jonathan Newman escaped a bases loaded jam in the fifth inning. Bryce Laird scored on a passed ball in the bottom of the sixth inning to give Pearland a 4-1 lead. Michael Brewer hit a 2-RBI single on the next pitch to give the All-Stars a 6-1 advantage.

But Rhode Island would not go away quietly. Pearland allowed two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to make it 6-4.

The double-elimination tournament continues through Sunday, August 24th when a new champion will be crowned.
