NTSB Recommends Lower BAC Limit

Having a couple drinks with dinner could land you in jail if the NTSB has their way.

The National Transportation Safety Board is recommending lowering the legal limit for alcohol content from .08 to .05.  The NTSB says the risk of having an accident increases 39% at .05 and over 100% at .08.

John McNamee with the Southeast Texas Affiliate of Mothers Against Drunk Driving says it is only one part to solving the problem, "we have the Campaign to Eliminate Drunk Driving, which includes plans for high-visibility enforcement, ignition interlocks for all offenders, and new technology that passively tests if a driver is above the legal limit."

Ray Hunt with the Houston Police Officer's Union says lowering the limit would criminalize resonable behavior, "I think the .08 is a fair number, if someone goes out to dinner and has a couple glasses of wine, they could be close to .05."

The NTSB says lowering the limit could save 1,000 lives a year across the entire country.
