Houston is set to debut the first addition to its light rail system in nearly a decade.

Residents will be able to begin riding the new 5.3-mile extension of the system's current line on Saturday.

Metro, the city's public transportation agency, is hosting a grand opening celebration with musical performances, food booths and activities for kids. Rides on the new light rail line will be free on Saturday.

The new line, which runs northeast from downtown Houston, cost $756 million to build.

The extension joins the 7.5-mile starter line, which began operating in 2004 and carries about 40,000 passengers each day.

Two other light rail lines are set to open in 2014.
